God Bless...

- My husband. He is currently painting the upstairs living room without a lick of help from his wife. This is the person who used to say that he hated painting. I'm sure that it still doesn't rank as one of his most favorite hobbies, but his attitude is remarkably pleasant considering that the color we choose is taking poorly and will require three coats. He began last night after work, painted until midnight and then woke up and began again. The ceilings in there are high and the hallway will have to be done, as well, since there is no good cutoff point unless we drew an arbitrary line and stopped there.

- The makers of Resolve. After dripping the new paint (a red/orange/pumpkin/rust-like color) on our off white carpet, panic was nearly washed away with a few spritzes of this stuff.

- The makers of our Dirt Devil steam cleaner. What the Resolve left behind, the steam cleaner eradicated. Not a trace of paint remaining! Together, I think they make magic. We even found a few spots that had dried and the duo of cleaner and vacuum still passed the challenge.

Baby Bonham

Shortly after posting about my pregnancy and all those who are pregnant along with me, I found out that our friends Shane and Erika are expecting their first baby in December just days before us (that makes four friends due right around me!). I wanted to announce the news, but figured I should wait until they made it public in their blogs. So finally, after nearly a year of not posting, Erika wrote of the amazing milestones they've had lately including the news of their baby. Love you guys- congratulations!

It is customary for us to make weekend "catch-up" calls to family. Sunday night, after the day's activities of church and Life Group, we gave Eric's mom a call. It was so sad, there was nothing new to report. Nothing super exciting to talk about. Nothing really worthy of mention. This is simply because I HAVE BEEN DOING NEXT TO NOTHING.

This whole lack of energy thing paired with this nausea thing are really getting in the way of me having much to report during our weekend calls! How dare they interupt my life like this!

There is beautiful summer weather outside! The outside pool at the Y opened this past week! We have a zoo pass! The park is around the corner! We own a trampoline! We have a Blues Clues sprinkler! My kids should be dirty and sun-kissed and enjoying a full day of activities!

Can you tell I'm feeling a bit guilty? It just doesn't seem right that the most we've done today is go to the gym, make quick bread, eat lunch, and nap. The boys played together as I watched from the couch...I just can't wait to get "back in the game".

The quick bread we made already has a decent chunk missing. It was from a Muffins cookbook that my friend, Heather, sent as a friendly Valentine's gift. The recipe is called 'country apple loaf cake' and has large wedges of tart apple in the batter and is topped with a crumble mixture. Certainly dessert worthy. MMMmmmmmm.

I'm even feeling so drained of energy that I have booked Grant's birthday party elsewhere. I couldn't bear the thought of cleaning this house spotless, only to have it torn to pieces by little children in a matter of two hours, so that I can clean it from top to bottom again following the party. This was a really hard decision for me, since I love entertaining and especially enjoy have large gatherings here in our home. But, I guess it's a matter of being realistic about what I can handle at this point. I'm not even doing a meal this year, we're just going to serve cake and ice cream. Thankfully, I don't think Mr. Big Four Year Old will fuss over the simple menu. Bless children and their priorities; I have a thing or two to learn from them!

AcccckkkkkKK!!!!

I'm not new to this pregnancy thing, but it does happen to be different every time. For instance, this nausea thing is kicking me in the pants! Each time, I've had the queezy feeling but none have been exactly alike.

With Grant, I was violently ill with morning and night sickness, losing both breakfast and dinner until about 5-6 months pregnant and losing weight in the process. With Dean, I felt great until 10 weeks and then just had two weeks of heavy nausea that forced me to recline on the couch a good part of the day. No weight loss, no throwing up. This time, my "all day nausea" is strong like a bout of stomach flu all of my waking minutes. I'm over a month into this and I haven't really had any relief. If I wake during the night at 2 a.m., the sick feeling is sure to be there. I don't notice it so much while I'm eating toast- but you can't eat non-stop through out the day, can you? That would certainly cause another set of stomach issues!

I especially feel bad for Eric, who hasn't had his happy wife around lately. At least I actually made dinner last night. And Grant and Dean are pretty desperate for their Mommy to be more playful, as well.

So, another thing that is bothering me with this pregnancy is that I'VE ALREADY STARTED TO SHOW! I won't even be eleven weeks until this weekend. Never before has the "pooch" occured so quickly. I haven't gained any weight, so it isn't all of the extra toast I've been consuming- it must just be the reorganization of my insides making way for Baby. No one on the street would dare ask if I was pregnant, so it might just be noticable to Eric and I. However, I dislike the "in-between stage" where you can't wear maternity clothes yet without drowning, but you certainly don't feel as comfortable in your normal clothes as you did a few weeks back. I was so disturbed by this discovery that I did a search for "showing at 10 weeks" to see if anyone else has transformed so quickly. Yep. That's right, most of these people are expecting twins. Twins. Aaaaccckkkkk!

I reported my findings to Eric last night and he asked me, "So would you rather them be identical or fraternal?". Cheeky.

Grace Bowen Bike-a-thon

Saturday was supposed to be the big day. Eric was the only one in our family planning to ride since I have been suffering "morning sickness" all of my waking minutes. (If I could just sleep all day until this is over!) The forcast for Saturday- 90% chance of thunderstorms- resulted in 6:00am call announcing the delay of event. The 32 mile trek along the Natchez Trace was rescheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. He was disappointed that the weather hadn't cooperated and we were left trying to figure out what to do with the unscheduled day ahead of us. We accomplished a few things around the house that were screaming to be done: laundry, mopping, replacing quarter-round molding in the master bath. All of the non-fun activities had to be balanced out somehow. So, we ended our day by heading off to Publix for some movie watching goodies (brownies, sorbet, and popcorn) and to Hollywood Video for a light hearted relax-and-don't-use-your-brain movie: Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Every once in awhile you need one of those movies that doesn't challenge you. And this one didn't. (It was cute and had it's moments, but I always find myself bothered by the roles of the sought-after girl and the secretly pining away boy. Why does he like her if she seems so ditzy and is easily wooed by Mr. Big Movie star? Why does he finally get courage after two decades to tell her how he feels now? Ah- it's just a movie.)

Sunday, we went to church. We didn't get paged from the nursery- yay! Pastor Dale is entering into a study of the Holy Spirit and there was so much good meat to the sermon that he went as long as he could before saying that we'd just pick up where we left off next week. Good stuff. Good stuff.

When we got home, we fed the tired little ones and put them down for nap. Eric and I relaxed a bit and then packed up the van for the bike-a-thon benifiting Grace. We have received a few pledges, but I am sure that anyone who would still like to help the cause can contact me and get in a donation. Proceeds are tax deductible and go toward the cost of suppliments for Grace who is currently in a wheelchair due to complications with her birth. With bike, snacks, and umpteen bottles of Gatorade and water packed we took off for the Natchez Trace. It took us roughly 40 minutes from our house to get to the entrace here in Nashville. At mile marker 440, the riders took off. All non-riders, like myself, headed off for the next rest stop twelve miles along the route. There, we unloaded coolers, blankets, and tricycles for the kids to ride on. Grant had a blast playing with Mali and Landis as they all had their own trikes and enjoyed swapping. Grace snoozed in her chair under the picnic table shelter and Dean tottered around for awhile while Owen enjoyed being passed from one set of cuddle-ready arms to the next. Everyone was having fun and all was good until Eric showed up well before anticipated...I mean we had just unloaded and weren't expecting him for at least a half hour!

He came with news that Grace's grandpa, who came all the way from Michigan to complete the 12 mile segment, was feeling overly fatigued and was asking for a car to come get him. Another biker stayed with Grandpa while Eric left his bike behind and hitched a ride to the rest area with a passing driver. The driver, it turns out, was from the 101st and had just returned from Iraq. Interesting sidenote. Anyway, I grabbed the boys and our belongings and drove Eric back to his bike where he resumed the ride along with Grandpa. He was feeling better and decided to continue!

Back to the rest stop for Grant, Dean, and me to wait for the riders and provide them with refreshment. Everybody was doing so well and it was declared that the first bit of the route was the hardest- possibly the worst of the whole 32 miles, save a few hills. But, since our cell phones weren't working out there and the walkie-talkies had limited range, I droved at a snails pace behind the pack to the next rest stop at mile marker 418. Just in case. Thankfully, I wasn't necessary and didn't provide this service on the next leg.

So, finally, it was on to the last stop- the finish line at mile marker 408. Here, there was an old home of a ferry operator and tradesman during the 1800s (Gordon house, I believe). Not much to see but the plaque, as the house was closed, but interesting all the same. If you traveled off a bit, there was the Duck river where he used to operate the ferry. I didn't feel like walking the half mile through the grass, but Grace's uncle Joel offered to take Landis and Grant out to the water. A few minutes later, Grant came bolting back as fast as his legs could make him run- without the other two. It was a Lassie-like moment that made me yell, "Is everything okay?!". His reply was simply, "I didn't want to go". Ah. Okay. Less drama please, then. Back to riding trikes with Mali and making sure bike trading only happens when he initiates it. Sharing is great when you want someone to share with you- but when they ask if you'll share with them....well, that's and entirely different story! So, we sat around and talked, munching peanut butter/oatmeal/honey balls (Becky, those were sooo good) and waiting for the first sign of the finishing riders. The real first riders, most of us never saw- they zoomed through the 32 miles nearly without stopping and were back to their cars at the start before we even set up post at the finish. However, out of the "normal" riders of average athletic ability, Eric and Kris were the first in. Yay for my husband! I'm so proud of him.

After refueling and resting a bit, we hopped in the van and headed home. It took a long time to get out of the Natchez trace since the speed limit is 40, and we were 32 miles deeper in than when we arrived. As the sun was going down, we spotted about 6-8 deer. On the way in, we had seen two wild turkeys. It is a beautiful stretch of road...and we only saw 32 miles of the total 500 that span three states. Lots of green, a few bridges with great views, hardly any cars, plenty of quiet, and plenty of road. Someday, it would be nice to do it again- maybe even make a camping/ biking trip of it. All when I'm feeling better of course.

My greatest accomplishment today has been typing this out...back to lying on the couch and nibbling toast.

December 12, 2004

We're pregnant again, and due on December 12th of this year! Inspired by the FAQ page on Owen Kelso's web site, here are my own:

Hey, I thought you were only going to have two kids?
Yes, we said that- and we have every right to change our minds.

So, were you "trying"?
How nosy of you. But, it wasn't an accident.

Wow. How old is Dean? Won't they be really close in age?
Dean just turned one in March. At the time of baby #3's arrival, Grant will be 4.5 and Dean will be nearly two. Yes, it's going to be busy around here for awhile, but we'll get to enjoy a lot of things earlier in life than if we'd waited longer to have this third child: diaper-free kids, mess-free dining, clothes that don't smell like spit-up, and -eventually- a kid free house while we're in our early forties! (Unless they just won't leave.)

You have two boys, were you trying for a girl?
No.

What would you prefer, a boy or a girl?
Eric and I would both like to try our hand at being parents to a girl, but have also entertained thoughts of a third boy. At this point, it's been decided by God, and thankfully, He knows what would suit this family best. And, we trust Him for the cliche (yet, much desired) "healthy baby".

Are you going to find out what it is?
Yes. Are you shocked?! This will certainly be new for us, as we let both other pregnancies remain a surprise until the end. My only fear is that it will somehow be wrong, or that the ultrasound tech won't be able to see the appropriate "parts". I guess that's what I'd deserve for "cheating".

Do you have any names picked out?
Nothing's settled.

How are you feeling?
Could be worse, could be better. Eric's bought me five 2-liter bottles of ginger ale to store in the pantry and we are going through toast like nobody's business!

Both times, you have been pregnant with one of your sisters-in-law, who's pregnant with you this time?
Right away, we called Becky and Angie who apparently think I shouldn't be pregnant alone (Grant was born four days after Riley, and Dean was born 22 hours after Olivia!) to see if the trend would continue. No and no. Thinking selfishly that all attention would be upon my child this time, I was thrilled. Shortly after getting our positive test, we received a call from friends Travis and Amy Button announcing that they are expecting, as well. And our due dates are a day apart! Amy said, "wouldn't it be convenient if we had the kids at the same time, then we could just walk down the hall to visit each other". Another friend, LaDonna Jones is expecting her third child one month before me. And, I nearly forgot, we recently discovered that old friends Jeremy and Gwen Baker from Arizona have our due date as well. Babies. Babies. Babies. Congrats to you all.

Wow.
That's not a question, and you said that already.

Summer Events!

While I don't watch News 2, I enjoy the mailer they send out each season with an Area Happenings guide. There are countless activities in Nashville and the surrounding area that I might not know about otherwise. Especially in the summertime, there are a variety of free things to do outdoors. Hundreds.

Here are just a few of the things I highlighted (some I don't know anything about, but they sounded worth checking into):
